In 1959, Ruth Handler invented what would become one of the most popular toys, the Barbie Doll. Barbie, full name Barbara Millicent Roberts, was named after Ruth Handler’s own daughter and was introduced at the American Toy Fair that was held in New York City.
Appearance
The original Barbie doll could be purchased as either a blonde or a brunette. In 1961, a red haired Barbie became available for purchase. It wasn’t until 1980 that an African-American and Hispanic version of the Barbie doll was released.
The original clothing of the Barbie doll reflected the styles that were popular of the time. The first doll was released in a black and white striped bathing suit and black heels. Extra clothing could be purchased for the dolls that reflected latest Paris runway trends.
Sales
During the Barbie’s year of release, the doll was sold for $3. A mint-condition original Barbie doll can now be sold to collectors for over $10,000. The Barbie doll saw an incredible amount of sales in her first year. In 1959, over 350,000 dolls were sold.
Controversy
Over the years, there has been some controversy about the physical measurements of the doll. If the doll were a real person, her measurements would be 36-18-36, which many people consider to be an impossibility.
