Most girls will try to decapitate or otherwise maim their precious Barbies at some point in their childhoods. The lucky Barbies survive with only a bad haircut or a hand painted green or pink, but others are not so fortunate. The girls eventually grow out of this phase and move onto different hobbies, but once in a while, someone with an interest in Barbies will continue, which is the case with this London artist who makes jewelry and art out of dismembered Barbies.
While the concept of making jewelry from various Barbie parts might sound grotesque and slightly twisted, jeweler Margaux Lange’s art is definitely more of a tribute to Barbie than anything negative or macabre. Mattel is also appreciative of Lange’s work and has in fact Mattel commissioned Lange to create more jewelry for them- the artist is also always quick to remind people that Barbie is a trademark of Mattel.
I took a quick peek at some of Lange’s Barbie art and was impressed with her unique designs. Some of the pieces, of course, are more “out there” than others. I was less impressed with a piece of jewelry that included multiple ears in a circle than I was with many of her other pieces which include faces and eyes. It may be just my personal taste, but Barbie’s ears aren’t her most stunning feature- in or out of a piece of jewelry. Her lips and her eyes are much more attractive than her ears. However, because of the wide range of pieces she has, I am sure that her work will appeal to a variety of customers.
Margaux Lange’s work has been shown all over the world. She has pieces that can be purchased on her Etsy site HERE. The artist also has a blog where she writes about different places that her work has been seen as well as different shops that are now selling her art. Unfortunately, Lange’s work is not all that inexpensive- most pieces begin at $150.
I am not even close to being the first to “discover” Lange’s work as she has been recognized in magazines and newspapers from Boss to Time Out New York for her artistic talents. Her work can also be seen in craft books as well.
