First Barbie Commercial

For Barbie fans all over, this will be a rather nostalgic video. If you have not already seen it, it will prove to be an interesting insight into Barbie's television debut.

What's all this about? Why it is the very first Barbie commercial dating back to 1959! It consists of a quaint little tune and catchy lyrics, making it a fun little video.

The presentation of the commercial is quite significant. After all, do keep in mind that Mattel wanted to introduce a whole new concept to doll creation – sophistication, elegance and beauty. And so the Barbie doll was a far cry from the cute, baby-like dolls of the time. Rather, it depicted a glamorous lady. This in effect was a recognition of the underlying interest of most young girls – the desire to emulate a female role model. And so it is no wonder that this is the very message broadcast by this commercial.

Speaking of historic significance, avid fans will be delighted to see Barbie in her trademark black-and-white swimsuit. This was the outfit that made Barbie famous; in fact, it is appropriate to call it her debut outfit of sorts. Of course, like most Barbie outfits we know today, the zebra striped suit also had fancy little accessories (black open toe heels and white sunglasses).

It's fascinating to see how far the Barbie doll has come in 50 years. When the classy little Barbie was first introduced, people wondered “Would this really work?”. Now, having grownup in a world where Barbie dolls are immensely popular and setting trends in her own right, it is hard to imagine a world without a Barbie.
